Today in class we looked at Andrew Goodwin’s theory. He wrote a book in 1992 called "Dancing in the distraction factory" in which he analysed music videos.
There are 6 elements he wrote about, they are:
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.
An example of this is in the song "Barbie girl" in which male and female characteristics are described. eg - "Barbie" brushes her hair and owns a horse whilst "Ken" drives a car and is always out with his friends.
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
An example of this is in the song Taylor Swift - Love story. She has followed parts of the film in her music video and so even without hearing the lyrics you would know its Romeo and Juliet
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.
An example of this is Katy Perry's - Thinking of you. The lyrics in the song are very slow soft and loving this is also portrayed in the music video.
4. The demands of the record label will include lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work. An example of this is Madonna being a sex symbol which has been carried on through out her whole career.
5. There is frequently the notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
An example of this is Britney Spears in her particular video "Hit me baby one more time" as she is a school girl in the video but isn’t dressed as a typical school girl. would look.
6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes and other music videos.)
An example of this is Eminem in his video "My name is" where he dresses up and impersonates The president and Marilyn Manson.
