Tracks by our band

As we have now decided what song and band we are going to use for our music video which is All Saints - Pure Shores. I have decided it would be a good idea to look at the other songs that the band has produced to have a look at what techniques and styles are used in the video to make our music video as realistic as possible. We will be able to get a better idea of the way the people in the band dress and the hair styles they have and the way they sing. Again by looking at this we will be able to make our music video similar to the style that the band already follows, this will also make it something that our target market can relate to.
The first video we have looked at is Never Ever

In this video i noticed that all the girls are close and comfortable around each other they are seen hugging and joking around. As well as being close to one another the video also shows that the girls like dogs and boys something in which all young girls like and maybe that was the reason they featured in the video, to keep their target market interested. Throughout the song there are many close ups of the girls, this is seen frequently and relates back to Andrew Goodwin’s theory with "The demands of the record label will include lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work" although they didn’t develop motifs they did have close ups on the artists.

The music video tells a story and there are flashbacks throughout. During the flash backs all the girls are smiling and laughing showing that they are happy. This is also something that would have appealed to their target market because young girls are also happy and smiley and so would have been influenced by this music video and it would have appealed to them. The close ups used in the music video aren’t all face on, sometimes the girls are looking away, having a side view and sometimes only half their face can be seen.

A final thing i noticed in this music video is that although all the girls are dressed in black which was used to have an effect in the music video and isn’t something that would necessarily appeal to their target market, all of the girls hair and make-up is done and they look girly which is something that would appeal to their target market as young girls like having their hair and make up done.

The next music video i have looked at by All Saints is Under the Bridge:

At the beginning of this music video there is a little boy playing on the guitar down a corridor for 30 seconds, there are no cuts to the girls or cuts away from the boy and so without knowing the video it would be difficult to know who the band was, the girls may have done this to emphasis a point in the song. When a band member is singing at the beginning the whole camera focus is on here, there are only one or two small cuts to the other band members. This may have been done to interest the fans and just focus on the their favourite band members at one point instead of all of them.
In the video there are some special effects, this is the first time i have noticed a special effect in an all saints video. Thy have may done this to attract a wider target market. During the chorus of the song there are shots of the girls together and quick shots to each of them, however throughout the rest of the song the shots are only of the person singing and then there is the odd shot to the other band members, this isn’t something that is usually seen in music videos as the girls are in a group and so the focus should be on all of them throughout instead of individual of the group throughout.
In the video the girls are wearing the same style clothes, top and trousers but in different colours. They may have done this to show that they are in a band and to take away from the fact that there are not many shots of them all together. All of the girls hair and make-up has been styled and so this will appeal to their target market because this is something that all young girls love to look like,. therefore making the video appealing to them.
The final video we have looked at is All Hooked Up:

In this music video i noticed that the girls in the band do not sing for the first 20 seconds,. instead there is close ups and medium shots of them therefore establishing the band. The beat of the song is very slow and this is emphasised with the long cuts to keep in with the beat. Throughout the song not only is there close ups of the girls faces but also what they are wearing and the jewellery. This would appeal to their target market because they will be able to copy/ get something similar to where, something in which all young girls love to do.

There are not many shots of the girls all together in the video; they are mostly on their own. By doing this the fans will be able to focus on their favourite band member instead of having to look at all of them, as well as that it fits in with the theme of the song as they are trying to show they are all in different places doing different things. When one of the band members is signing the focus on the camera is all on them, there is very little shots of other band members whilst one member is singing.

As I mentioned before there are no shots of the girls all together, as well as that all the girls are in different style clothes which is totally the opposite to the above video. There are no dance moves and so therefore doesn’t follow the conventions of a pop music video as much. By doing things differently in their music videos it is more likely to appeal to a wider target market because not everyone will want to see girls dancing in the music video and so they may enjoy this type of music video more.
